EMS Courses for Health Care Providers

The GVA Training Department offers a variety of CPR and EMS-related classes that are open to the public. The following list of courses represents just some of those available. Classes intended for the general public are listed here. Other GVA training opportunities are described here.

Some courses are offered frequently (for example, CPR for the professional rescuer and its refresher are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month and Heartsaver CPR & First Aid is held on the 2nd Saturday [9-12: CPR, 12-3: First Aid]), whereas others are offered only when there is enough interest. You can contact the Community Training Department by calling 227-2073 x1 or by clicking here.

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers The BLS for Healthcare Providers Course covers core material such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation. This course is for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respiratory therapists who must have a credential (card) documenting successful completion of a CPR course.
    (Prerequisite: None)

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers Refresher This refresher course covers the same material as the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course, but in an abbreviated format for those who have previously taken the full course.
(Prerequisite: Current BLS for Healthcare Provider Card)

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Medical providers who respond to cardiovascular emergencies in and out of the hospital enhance their treatment abilities through the American Heart Association's Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) training. In this classroom-based course, providers enhance their skills in treating adult victims of cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. From basic life support to advanced interventions and from airway management to pharmacology and more, professionals hone their skills to save lives, while earning their American Heart Association ACLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card.
    (Prerequisite: None)

  • ECG and Pharmacology This is the only course of its kind that focuses on specific ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge. Students may use this classroom-based course as a pre-course option to help achieve ACLS certification.
    (Prerequisite: None)

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) This classroom-based course uses a scenario-based, team approach to teach pediatric emergency management of patients approaching or already in respiratory or cardiac arrest.
    (Prerequisite: None)

  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) PHTLS was developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. It offers a unique approach to trauma care, promoting critical thinking and addressing the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs.
    (Prerequisite: None)

  • Courses for Groups. These and other courses can be arranged for groups. Contact the GVA Community Training Department for information and scheduling by calling 227-2073 x1 or by clicking here.

  • GVA is an authorized provider of CPR and ECC courses for the American Heart Association
